HOW IT WORKS

The porting process, step by step

Porting a number means transferring it from your current carrier to us. Here’s exactly what happens from the moment you submit your request.

1

Submit your port request

Fill out our online port-in form with your number, current carrier account info, and the name on the account. This takes about 5 minutes.

Takes ~5 minutes
2

We submit the request to your old carrier

We send a Letter of Authorization (LOA) and your account details to your current provider on your behalf. Your current service stays active throughout — you won’t lose calls or texts.

Same business day
3

Your old carrier validates and approves

They verify your account info matches their records. If anything doesn’t match exactly — like a name typo or wrong account number — they’ll reject the request and we’ll contact you right away to correct it.

1–2 business days
4

Port completion — your number is live with us

On the Firm Order Commitment (FOC) date, your number transfers automatically. You’ll receive a confirmation text and your service on Phone Service USA becomes active. Your old account closes for this number automatically.

BEFORE YOU START

What you'll need to port your number

Having these details ready ensures your request goes through without delays.

⚠️  Do not cancel your current service before the port completes. Canceling first releases your number back into the pool and makes it unrecoverable.
📄

Account number

Found on your current carrier’s bill or in your online account settings. Not the same as your phone number.

🔐

Account PIN or passcode

The 4–6 digit PIN used to verify your identity with your carrier. Call them if you’ve forgotten it.

🏠

Billing address on file

Must match exactly what your current carrier has — even spacing and abbreviations matter.

👤

Account holder name

The name the account is registered under. For business accounts, use the business name, not a contact name.

📱

Phone number to port

The 10-digit number you want to keep. You can port multiple numbers by submitting separate requests.

Active service on that number

Your number must currently be active and in good standing with your existing carrier.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Porting FAQ

Answers to what most customers ask before, during, and after porting.

Most US numbers — mobile, landline, and VoIP — are portable. Numbers that cannot be ported include those that have already been disconnected, numbers registered to a different country, and numbers that a carrier has flagged as ineligible. If your number isn’t portable, we’ll tell you before you complete signup.
In almost all cases, no. Your existing service stays active until the moment the port completes. There may be a window of a few minutes where calls route between carriers, but standard practice is a seamless cutover. We recommend completing the port on a day you’re not expecting critical calls, just as a precaution.
Mobile number ports typically complete in 1 business day. Landline and VoIP numbers can take 3–5 business days due to additional coordination with local carriers. We’ll send you a confirmation with the expected completion date once your old carrier approves the request.
Rejections happen most often because the account information submitted didn’t exactly match the carrier’s records. We’ll notify you immediately with the rejection reason so you can correct the details and resubmit. Common fixes: double-check your account number, PIN, and billing address spelling. Most ports that are initially rejected go through on the second attempt.
Yes. Individual lines on a family or group plan can be ported out independently. However, the port request must be authorized by the primary account holder. If you’re not the primary account holder, have them submit or cosign the request.
Porting your number away signals to your carrier that you’re leaving, and they will typically close that line. If you’re under contract or an installment plan, you may owe an Early Termination Fee (ETF) or remaining device balance — that’s between you and your current carrier and isn’t something we can waive. Check your current contract before porting if you’re concerned about fees.
No. Porting your number in is completely free. The FCC requires that carriers allow number portability and prohibits charging customers for porting their number to another carrier.
